2009 Chile 50 Peso "Chiie" Error

Coinzine’s Coin of the Day: 2008 Chile 50 Peso “Chiie” Error

Source: AFP

What’s worse than misspelling your country’s name?  How about having it manufactured on thousands of circulating coins for your citizens to see!

In late 2008, the Chilean government  converted it’s Mint to a privately held corporation, an unpopular decision both with the Mint’s employee base and with it’s citizens.  While the results have been mixed, an interesting twist was discovered.  To the delight of Chilean coin collectors, a strange anamoly was produced.

Strangely, the word Chile was misspelled “Chiie” on the 50 peso coin.  Pedro Urzua, the Mint manager in charge of the shift, later stated “I have been accused of intentionally placing (on the coin) More >

PL designation adds another wrinkle to certified ATB 5 oz Silver Coins

PCGS and NGC, 2 of America’s leading certification services, have added an interesting wrinkle to the 2010 America the Beautiful Silver Coins – a special “proof like” designation on well struck, highly polished coins.  The special proof like coins have drawn extra attention on a popular auction site, where they have been drawing huge premiums.

Similarly, a few lucky collectors found themselves in possesion of the 2009 Ultra High Relief $20 Gold coin in PL MS69 and MS70.  The rare “PL” coins have been known to sell for 5 to 10 times the average price of a similarly graded MS69 or MS70 without the special More >

Up Next for the US Mint: 2011 Army Commemorative Coin Program

The United States Mint is preparing for it’s first of three commemorative releases in 2011.  First up – the 2011 US Army Commemorative coin program.  The series will feature an uncirculated and proof version for each of the 3 standard commemorative denominations – a clad half dollar, a silver dollar, and a $5 gold coin.  A maximum mintage has been authorized to be split between business strikes and a collectors proof edition for each:  100,000 $5 gold coins, 500,000 silver $1 coins, and 750,000 half-dollar clad coins.  Of the three, the silver dollar is both likely to be the most popular More >

2009 Palau Coconut Scents of Paradise Coin

Coinzine’s Coin of the Day: 2009 Palau Scents of Paradise Coconut $5 Silver Coin

In 2009, the Republic of Palau created a truly one of a kind coin series…a “scratch and sniff” coin collection.  The “Scents of Paradise” series featured 2 one ounce silver coins, the “Marine Breeze” and “Coconut”.  With a miniscule (like the island nation) mintage of just 2500, these were swiftly scooped up by hungry (ha ha) collectors.  The coins are minted with a prooflike surface and feature enameled effects on the obverse.  However, the truly unique and remarkable twist is that the coins have been scented to smell like their titles! The unique series was later nominated for COTY (Coin of More >

Financial Balderdash: Conditional Buy on Stocks Part 64

I realize that I sound like a broken record, or as some people would say in derogatory fashion: a QE-tard. Let’s face it folks, where the stock market is concerned the game is rigged by billions and billions of dollars that are regularly deployed by the Wall Street evildoers thanks to POMO. Yes, one day it will end badly and perhaps with inadequate notice but for now the fed is your friend as we approach Dow 12,000. Woo hoo.

Believe me, I am not wearing my daughter’s cheerleading outfit. I really despise why and how the market is being manipulated higher. More >

2008 James Monroe Triple Error Missing Edge Lettering

Coinzine’s Coin of the Day: 2008 James Monroe Dollar Triple Error – 15% Off-Center – Strong Clash Dies – Missing Edge Lettering PCGS MS65

Today’s coin of the day is a Presidential dollar error.  This series is fascinating as the edge lettering added a whole new wrinkle to the fold by requiring alteration to the “third side”.   Since the release of the series in 2007, several new error types have been discovered, including “Missing Edge Lettering”, “Double Edge Lettering”, and “Missing Obverse/Reverse but Edge Lettered”.   Today’s error can be found in Fred Weinberg’s inventory.  As per his description “A fantastic looking coin with “aluminum toning in obverse fields”. This UNIQUE James Monroe dollar is Struck 15% Off-Center @ 12:00, has very strong Clashed More >

9-11 Anniversary Coin

Editorial: Schumer and Nadler Blast Deceptive Advertising of 9/11 “Commemorative” Coin

The National Collectors Mint is in hot water again, this time for their “10th anniversary” of 9/11 tribute coins.  Senator Chuck Schumer and Congressman Jerrold Nadler have contacted the Federal Trade Commission regarding the coins, currently advertised for $29.95 on a national television campaign.   They publicly stated

“a company selling coins commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks has no shame.” and that the NCM is deceiving the public by using deceptive sales practices by claiming the silver used in the coins is from the World Trade Center.

“Let’s be honest, we all know what this is. It’s an attempt by More >
